  18.     Welcome to ImageStudio v2.2.x! This release sees the following
  19. additions to the program:
  20.  
  21.     i)      Many more loaders and savers. ImageStudio now supports
  22. the TIFF file format, datatypes plus many other well used formats.
  23.  
  24.     ii)     Colour preview. This was probably the most requested
  25. improvement by users after a font sensitive interface.
  26.  
  27.     iii)    The internal viewer is now an external module. This
  28. allows us to add extra viewers easily, including hopefully support for
  29. the CyberGraphX standard when we get a CyberGraphX compatible card.
  30.  
  31.     iv)     The unregistered version now crops images to 512x512
  32. rather than the meagre 250x250.
  33.  
  34.     v)      A printed and illustrated manual is now available from
  35. LH Publishing (details below).
  36.  
  37.     We suggest that users completely replace their v2.1.x IO modules
  38. with the v2.2.x versions, as the module format has changed slightly.
  39. Don't also forget to change the value of INTERNALVIEWER preference
  40. if you have either an AGA Amiga or Amiga with a graphics card to take
  41. advantage of the best viewer module for your Amiga.

  44. will continue to support ImageStudio.

  48. Obtaining a Printed Manual
  49. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  50.     Although we provide the documentation on disk in many different
  51. formats, we have had many requests to provide the documentation in
  52. printed form. We've got together with LH Publishing (address below)
  53. to produce a 70+ page manual containing most of the online text with
  54. illustrations and diagrams. The manual is ideal for beginners to image
  55. processing as well as those who prefer the convenience of printed
  56. matter.  The manual is clearly and expertly laid out by Larry Hickmott
  57. of LH Publishing, an Amiga writer and someone with much expertise in
  58. Amiga DTP.
  59.  
  60.     The manual is available from LH Publishing for 5.99UK pounds

  69.     The manual also includes two disks containing the very latest
  70. (unregistered) version of the program, allowing an introduction to
  71. ImageStudio for beginners as well as an easy way to upgrade for
  72. registered users.

  74. The PNG File Format
  75. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  76.     After the release of v2.1.0 of ImageStudio we wrote an IO
  77. module for the new PNG image file format. As the format is new, the
  78. code was based on beta versions of the PNG library routines and
  79. incomplete specifications. We were hoping that by the time we came
  80. to releasing v2.2.0 of ImageStudio the PNG file format would have
  81. been finished, but this is unfortunately not the case.
  82.  
  83.     The current documentation therefore contains references to the
  84. capabilities of the PNG IO module, but no actual PNG module is contained
  85. in the package as we still consider it "work in progress". The PNG
  86. module will officially be included with the ImageStudio package when
  87. the PNG library is finished; until then we keep our pre-release
  88. PNG module available separately in the public domain.
  89.  
  90. 'Uncrash' Utility Program
  91. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  92.     Provided with this release is a CLI utility called 'UnCrash'
  93. which aims to recover ImageStudio virtual memory swap files after
  94. a system crash.
  95.  
  96.     It should be made clear that is should be impossible to crash
  97. the machine with ImageStudio, we are assuming that some other program
  98. has caused the crash or there has been a power failure.
  99.  
  100.     The UnCrash program takes the raw data virtual memory swap file
  101. left on the disk after the crash and tries to convert it into a file
  102. which can be read by ImageStudio's VMEM IO module. This operation is
  103. usually successful, but may fail if it was a really good crash(!).
  104.  
  105.     It also should be worth mentioning that our virtual memory
  106. scheme is not in any way "dangerous" or likely to cause disk problems.
  107. We only use standard system routines for the disk access and so
  108. the chance of our virtual memory routines causing disk errors is the
  109. same as any program that loads or saves files.
  110.  
  111. Keyfiles and Piracy
  112. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  113.     It became obvious from version 1.x.x, that our method of upgrading
  114. the software was becoming impractical for a large number of orders. We
  115. could therefore either (i) charge for upgrades or (ii) change the upgrade
  116. method. As we aim to provide the best value for money image processor on
  117. the Amiga, option (i) was decided against.
  118.  
  119.     We have therefore opted for the popular "keyfile" concept of
  120. upgrades. This works as follows:
  121.  
  122.     o       New registered users will receive the latest version of
  123.         ImageStudio along with a personalised keyfile. When
  124.         ImageStudio is started, if it finds a valid keyfile it
  125.         will "unlock" the program to become fully functional.
  126.  
  127.     o       Existing registered users will have to generate a new
  128.         keyfile for use with ImageStudio-2.0.0 and above. This is
  129.         done by running the new version of the program, selecting
  130.         `Create keyfile' in the `Project' menu and selecting their
  131.         registered copy of v1.x.x of ImageStudio. Once this
  132.         version of ImageStudio is deemed to be a valid registered
  133.         copy, a keyfile will be generated which will cause version
  134.         2 and above of ImageStudio to work fully.
  135.  
  136.     Please note:
  137.  
  138.     YOUR KEYFILE IS FOR YOUR PRIVATE USE AND SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN TO
  139.     ANYONE ELSE. Each keyfile is individual and can be traced back
  140.     to the registered user. Do not try and alter the keyfile, it won't
  141.     work.
  142.  
  143.     The only reason we can continue to sell ImageStudio so cheaply and
  144. provide free updates is because we have had a healthy response with people
  145. registering. If the number of registrations drops because people abuse the
  146. keyfile system and distribute pirate copies of the program, we will be
  147. forced to do one or several of the following:
  148.  
  149.     i)      Stop providing free upgrades. All programs will be
  150.         individually stamped and all upgrades must be paid for.
  151.  
  152.     ii)     Remove online help and provide printed manuals instead. This
  153.         will naturally raise the price substantially.
  154.  
  155.     iii)    Sell the software to a software publisher for commercial
  156.         distribution. This is likely to lead to a large price
  157.         increase.
  158.  
  159.     iv)     Stop developing ImageStudio and related products.
  160.  
  161. We see no reason why we should have to resort to any of these measures, but
  162. if you're using a pirated copy of ImageStudio now and you refuse to register,
  163. you WILL force this upon us.
  164.  
  165.     If you are using a pirate copy of ImageStudio, so will hundreds of
  166. others. A hundred orders to us is the difference between us writing the next
  167. version of the program, and us abandoning it. It really is your choice.
